Yesterday I took part in a “preview session” of David Perell’s Write of Passage program.
If you’ve been on my writing journey the past few weeks, I’ve been exploring my stories, my struggles, and how to make sense of my performance energy.
So I figured I’d see what this program was all about.
I arrived to the hour-long Zoom, along with 390 (!!!) folks from all over the world. I was primed and ready to judge. Ready to doubt. Ready to consider this a one-hour commercial for an expensive course. My BS radar was set to STUN.
During the presentation, they gave out a writing assignment:
What do each of these things want you to write about? Your Head, Your Heart, and Your Wallet? Write one sentence for each in four minutes.
Here are my answers:
HEAD
How to start, grow, manage, scale, operate, and sell small-to-medium-sized creative agenciesHEART
Comedy, and allowing myself to break free of others' expectations of my identity and creativityWALLET
Brand strategy, marketing, and communications
And then we pasted them into the Zoom chat. 390 people at once. An avalanche of verbiage.
But one entry caught David’s eye. Just one. He read it to everyone and said, “Amazing. That’s a 10/10 answer.”
It was mine.
So glad you’re on my writing journey with me. Thanks for being here.
Now that you’ve heard what my head, heart, and wallet want from me, I have to ask: why are you here? What stories are you waiting for?
WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?
The heart response pumps the most blood. Naturally.
How about we have a talk on life after incarceration, homelessness, addition and second chance or do those issues go ignored?
