"When I was nine, I couldn't run up and down the soccer field. Too uncoordinated. They stuck me at goalie.
It wasn’t until 8th grade when my body finally clicked together like Voltron."
That's really heartening to know. Our daughter's 5 and she is having an interesting go of the game. She's having a blast but the coordination and focus are, well, not there yet. So much so the other parents are getting a bit ticked.
My rule for now is that fun's gotta come first. It becomes a chore or something everyone thinks she can't do, she'll likely quit. So trying to keep the vibes up while also practicing intentionally with her outside of team practice. But it's slow going and the games are stressful.
This gives me a lot of optimism, so thanks for sharing.
WHO are these parents of “5-year-old Mia Hamms” who are getting mad at you? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard all day. If the kid isn’t sitting on the ground picking flowers and stays on the field during the game, that’s a successful 5yo.
Good on you for keeping fun the main thing, for now. There will be lots of time for preparing for the World Cup (eye roll).
40s yes, for sure. But also the shoulder seasons of life, whenever they occur.

🙌🏻👏🏻🙌🏻 I'm in! Bring on the book. Great story about your daughter 🔥 I'm subscribing for the dad jokes 👊🏻
BTW, as a former coach, my evaluation of the info you provided says her athleticism came from mom — her attitude from you 🤙🏻
Probably true. I’ll take it! Great to have you along.
You got this, Alec!
Sooooo good
Thank you!

Your daughter taught you a valuable lesson - wishing you the best on both challenges.
As a dad, I always said JR High is the perfect time to try stuff out.
But I'm finally realizing, times of transition are the perfect opportunities to try stuff. You just gotta be brave enough to do it.
Bon chance my friend
I think you're saying that your 40s is the Junior High of life?
